Maintenance Advice

What is natural oil finish?

Natural oiled finishes allow the oil to soak deep into the wood and bond with it at a molecular level, making the wood stronger, and leaving its texture and colour unobstructed.  Over time, they produce a patina that ages with the wood, so it never acquires the dull, outworn look that can occur with surface finishes. Natural oiled floors need a little more maintenance than UV-oiled or lacquered floors as it requires regular cleaning with particular maintenance products that help replenish the oils in the wood, as the floor is cleaned it gains further protection against wear and tear. This type of finish appears more natural compared to UV-oiled or lacquered wood floors.

Some Tips – Your “Plan A”

  1. Keep dirt outside. Invest in a nice doormat that traps sand and dirt from being introduced into your home. Sand can act like sandpaper and grind on your wood floor when you walk around. They can also deposit into brushed marks and joints which will make the cleaning process harder.
  2. Use protective pads on your furniture. A good tip to prevent scratch marks on your wood floor is to use protective pads on your furniture. You may think furniture that doesn’t move will not require any measures, but the fact is, every time we sit down, our sofa makes some movement and over time this might damage the floor finish.
  3. Quickly mop up spills & don’t use normal household cleaner. Whilst all finishes afford your flooring some water resistance, wood flooring is not waterproof. It’s tempting to use a household cleaner to care for your wood floor, but many household cleaners contain chemicals that will harm the finish. So it is better to use the right maintenance products suitable for your floor finish.
